A concrete driveway cracks for one of three reasons: the ground underneath moved, the concrete wasn’t given room to expand and contract, or water got where it shouldn’t have. Understanding which one caused your specific problem determines whether a $15 tube of caulk fixes it or you need to call a contractor.
Why Concrete Driveways Crack
Concrete is rigid but not indestructible. It expands and contracts with temperature swings of even 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit. If it has nowhere to move, it cracks on its own terms instead of at the joints designed to control it.
Soil movement is the other major culprit. Clay soil expands when wet and shrinks when dry, sometimes by as much as 10% in volume. If your driveway was poured over improperly compacted fill, or over soil with high clay content, you’ll see cracking within the first few years, often in a diagonal pattern running from a corner.
Freeze-thaw cycles make both problems worse. Water seeps into small cracks or the porous surface, freezes, expands by about 9%, and widens whatever gap it found. This is why driveways in northern climates need more frequent sealing than those in Arizona or South Texas.
Preventing Cracks Before They Start
Prevention happens mostly at installation, but ongoing maintenance matters just as much for driveways already in place.
- Control joints should be cut every 8 to 10 feet for a standard residential driveway, and no more than 24 to 30 times the slab thickness apart. A 4-inch thick driveway needs joints roughly every 8-10 feet to give cracking somewhere predictable to happen.
- Slab thickness matters. 4 inches is standard for a car driveway; if you park trucks, RVs, or trailers regularly, go with 5-6 inches and consider reinforcing with rebar or wire mesh.
- The concrete mix should be at least 3,500 PSI, and 4,000 PSI in regions with harsh winters. Ask your contractor what mix they’re using before the truck arrives.
- Proper base preparation, typically 4-6 inches of compacted gravel, prevents the soil shifting that causes most structural cracks. Skipping this step to save money is the single most common cause of early driveway failure.
- Seal the concrete within the first year, then reapply every 2-3 years. A penetrating silane or siloxane sealer keeps water from soaking in and freezing beneath the surface.
- Keep water moving away from the slab. Grade the surrounding soil so it slopes away from the driveway, and clean out gutters or downspouts that dump water onto the edges.
If you’re planning a new pour, ask about isolation joints anywhere the driveway meets a garage slab, sidewalk, or foundation. These 1/2-inch gaps filled with flexible material let each slab move independently instead of pushing against each other.
Repairing Hairline and Small Cracks
Cracks under 1/8 inch wide are cosmetic and mostly about keeping water out. For these, a concrete crack sealant in a caulking tube works well. Clean the crack with a wire brush, blow out debris with compressed air, and apply the sealant, pushing it down into the crack rather than just smoothing it over the top. Most products cure within 24 hours and can be painted over or left as is.
Cracks between 1/8 inch and 1/2 inch need a bit more material. Concrete patching compound or a polyurethane crack filler, applied with a caulking gun, handles this range. Backer rod (a foam rope sold at hardware stores) should be pressed into cracks wider than 1/4 inch before filling, so the sealant has something to bond to and doesn’t sink into the gap.
Timing matters. Repair cracks in dry weather, ideally when temperatures are between 40-85 degrees Fahrenheit, and avoid filling them right before a hard freeze since uncured sealant can be damaged by ice.
Repairing Larger Cracks and Settlement Damage
Cracks wider than 1/2 inch, or ones where one side sits higher than the other, point to a bigger issue underneath, usually soil erosion or settlement. Filling these with caulk is a temporary fix at best.
For settlement cracks without severe height differences, concrete resurfacing can restore the appearance and add a protective layer, but it won’t fix what’s happening below the slab. If the height difference between sides of the crack is more than 3/4 inch, or if the crack is growing wider each season, the slab likely needs mudjacking or polyurethane foam injection. Both methods lift the sunken section by pumping material underneath it, and polyurethane foam has become more common because it cures in about 15 minutes and weighs a fraction of traditional mudjacking slurry.
Cracks running the full width of the driveway, especially near the garage entrance where vehicle weight concentrates, sometimes indicate the slab needs to be replaced in sections rather than patched. Patching a structurally failing slab usually means redoing the same repair within two or three years.
DIY Repair vs Calling a Professional
Hairline cracks, small chips, and minor surface spalling are reasonable DIY projects with materials available at any hardware store, usually costing under $50 for a typical driveway. Anything involving settlement, cracks wider than 3/4 inch, or cracks affecting more than 20% of the slab surface area is worth getting a professional opinion on, since the underlying cause needs diagnosis before any fix will last.
A contractor can also tell you whether resurfacing, patching, or a full replacement makes more financial sense. As a rough guide, resurfacing costs $3-7 per square foot, while full replacement runs $8-18 per square foot depending on region and slab thickness.
Walk your driveway this week with a tape measure and mark any crack wider than 1/4 inch with chalk. That single inspection tells you whether you’re dealing with a weekend project or a call worth making before the next freeze-thaw season does more damage.
